The plot area formula

For a rectangular plot, the area is simply:

Area = Length × Width

If you measure in feet, the result is in square feet directly. To convert: divide square feet by 9 for square yards (gaj), by 10.7639 for square metres, by 1,089 for Guntha, by 435.6 for cent, or by 43,560 for acre. For an L-shaped or irregular plot, split it into rectangles, calculate each, and add the areas.

Accuracy note

This calculator assumes a rectangular plot with right-angle corners — multiply length × width. Real plots are often irregular (trapezoidal or multi-sided), so the on-ground area from a licensed surveyor may differ slightly; for those, divide the plot into rectangles and triangles or rely on the survey measurement. The square feet, square yard, square metre, Guntha (1,089 sq ft), cent (435.6 sq ft) and acre (43,560 sq ft) factors used here are standard and exact. The legally binding area for a transaction is the one stated on the approved layout plan and the registered sale deed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the area of a 30×40 plot?

A 30 ft × 40 ft plot is 1,200 square feet (about 133.33 square yards / 111.48 square metres / 1.10 Guntha).

What is the area of a 40×60 site?

A 40 ft × 60 ft site is 2,400 square feet — which is exactly 1 Ground and about 266.67 square yards.

How do I calculate plot area from dimensions?

Multiply length × width in the same unit (e.g. 30 ft × 50 ft = 1,500 sq ft), then convert by dividing: by 9 for square yards, 1,089 for Guntha, or 435.6 for cent.

How many square feet is 1 square yard?

1 square yard (gaj) = 9 square feet, so a 1,200 sq ft plot is 133.33 gaj.
